His infectious spirit and humor drew others to him and made him a force on stage-a passion and talent he shared with his mom and sister. He is survived by: Tayven and Skye, Brian & Shaunna Thompson, Alexa (Jeremy) Garcia, Shelby Bruning, Grandma Vicki and many other family members and friends. We take comfort in knowing that he has been embraced by loving grandparents that have gone before: Grandpa Heber, Grandma & Grandpa Harmon and Grandma & Grandpa Durrant.

Nicholas “Nicky” Herrera, age 36, died on Monday October 10th, 2016 while on hospice in Salt Lake City, UT due to a very short and sudden bout with an aggressive leukemia. Many of his closest friends were able to visit with him before his passing and were all grateful to have an extra bit of sunshine in their lives for just a little while longer. He lived with Front Line Services in Riverton, UT for the past year, and with Danville Services in Orem, UT for 15 years before that. Nicholas led an extremely challenging life due to numerous health and safety concerns, and required an enormous amount of love and support throughout his entire life, which his supporters were all happy to provide. Nicholas made a lasting impression on everyone around him and had a truly individual character. The world is a darker place without his infectious smile and laugh, and for many of us, like one of the songs he loved to sing, he was our sunshine. We will miss him dearly. A special thanks to all of Nicholas’ supporters over the years from Danville and Front Line Services for their loving, compassionate, and unwavering support. Their tireless dedication has made all the difference.

Rick Wheadon

Rick Dean Wheadon, 59, beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend died on October 19, 2016 in Alpine, Utah, surrounded by his family. Rick was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on April 1, 2016.

He was born on July 14, 1957, in Murray, Utah, to Dean Asial Wheadon and Sherrie Helen Fitzgerald. He was raised in Provo, Utah as the oldest of seven children. Growing up, he worked on his uncle Ferris’ farm, where he learned the value of hard work. He carried that work ethic with him throughout the rest of his life. He started his own sprinkler company while attending Provo High School (Class of 1975). He served a mission in Helsinki, Finland during 1976-1978, where he developed a great love for the Finnish people. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management at Brigham Young University.

Rick married his sweetheart Jana Fuhriman on September 12, 1979 in the Provo LDS Temple. They enjoyed 37 wonderful years together. They made their home in Provo, Orem, Antioch (CA), and Sandy, before settling in Alpine, where they have lived for the past 23 years. Their greatest joy has been their five children and nine grandchildren.

Rick’s career began at a small engineering firm, Community Consultants, which he ran with his father. Rick and his family moved to California in 1988 where Rick took a job at Carollo Engineers. During his 28 years at Carollo, he served in various leadership and technical roles for water/wastewater projects throughout the U.S. Rick's specialty was managing large water treatment and infrastructure projects. He served as a member of the Board of Directors, as a partner, the Chief Financial Officer, Office Manager, and most recently as the Managing Director of Client Services. Rick served in leadership positions in the American Water Works Association and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was honored with the George Warren Fuller Award, the Charlie Wilson award, and was awarded the Outstanding Service Award from the American Water Resources Association. Rick and Jana treasure the friendships they made throughout Rick’s career with co-workers, clients, partners, and other members of these organizations. He is remembered professionally for his creativity, integrity, sensitivity, but most of all, his capacity to care for and build up others.

Rick was active in the LDS church where he served in many positions including two turns as a bishop’s counselor in Alpine and three years as bishop of the YSA 22nd ward in Provo. Most recently Rick and Jana worked with the young adults in the YSA Fort Canyon Ward in Alpine. He has spent decades working with the youth of the church, and loved the scouting program. Rick was an Eagle Scout and attended the Woodbadge Scouting Leadership Program.

Rick always took time to stop and enjoy the world around him. Rick loved the outdoors and had a great reverence for nature. He enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing, golf and skiing. Since Rick’s diagnosis in April, Rick and Jana enjoyed every day they had together. Many times Rick would say, “I can be sick at home or I can be sick while I’m fishing, so let’s go fishing.” Rick lived with passion and joy, and had great love for the people and places around him. He loved spending time in the mountains and canyons near his home, and the red rocks of St. George and Lake Powell. He especially loved sharing his favorite spots with people. Rick and Jana loved their date nights to watch BYU basketball and football. He also developed a great love for family history work. Rick was a handyman and loved to build, create, and renovate. He treasured time with his children and grandchildren. He always believed that his family was his greatest blessing, but also felt great love and support from his Carollo family, his church family, and his many other friends and colleagues throughout his life.

Rick was a strong, hard worker, but was always able to make those around him feel comfortable and confident. He was a master communicator, and was known for remembering each individual and expressed sincere interest in their challenges and aspirations. He was loyal and fiercely protective of his loved ones. Above all, though, he loved the Savior and never wavered in his faith. His love for Jesus Christ and the testimony of Him remains an example to all who knew Rick. His mantra was to never shrink, but to have faith in the plan that Our Heavenly Father has for us. He valiantly faced his battle with cancer with courage and optimism. His bright smile never faded and his strength inspired everyone that knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Jana, his five children, Jake (Erin) Wheadon, Whitney (Bill) De Groot, Kelsey (Evan) Shelley, Tanner (Marcia) Wheadon, Madison Wheadon, and nine grandchildren: Ava, Noah, Henry and Elodie Wheadon, Nina and Elin De Groot, Agnes, Emmerich and Edith Shelley. Rick was also survived by his mother, Sherrie (Dale) Howlett, and his siblings: Keri (David) Frampton, Mark (Ann) Wheadon, Kristie Gordon, Kate Wheadon, Kimberly Wheadon, and Joseph (Clare) Wheadon and his stepmother, Maureen Wheadon.  He was preceded in death by his father, Dean Wheadon.

The Wheadon family would like to thank Dr. Ignacio Garrido Laguna and the pancreatic cancer team at Huntsman Cancer Institute. We appreciate the loving care you gave to our husband and father. #stronglikerick

Maxine (Mackie) Moon Rowley passed away peacefully on October 27, 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  She was born on December 23, 1934 in Mesa, Arizona to Harold K Moon and Ellen Dewitt Moon, and grew up on farms in Arizona and Idaho.

She learned to drive as a young teenager on the family farm, and always took great pride in that skill.  When she entered Lincoln High school after her family moved to Orem, Utah she encountered two of her true loves in one class when she met her sweetheart and future husband, Carl Rowley, while auditioning for choir.  Mackie loved music and sang in a very popular trio all through high school, and later she was part of the BYU Program Bureau (precursor to the BYU Young Ambassadors). Mackie also performed on the drill team as a Tigerette and loved watching Carl play sports for Lincoln High.

Mackie and Carl married in the Salt Lake temple on November 10, 1954 and welcomed their first son, Creig in 1956, and over the next fourteen years they added Steve, LeeAnn, Russell, Kathleen and Val.  Throughout their married life Mackie and Carl lived in California and Utah, and traveled to Mexico, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, the Caribbean and all around the United States.

Mackie especially loved vacations that involved spending time with her large extended family and enjoyed very close relationships with her brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.  The more people who could attend a party, the better.  Mackie was famous for her loud laugh, hilarious impressions, masterful storytelling, spectacular whistling and glamourous sunglasses.  She was a skilled decorator and took pride in both her beautiful yard and the fact that she didn’t really have to do any of the yard work.

As season ticket holders for both BYU football and basketball, Carl and Mackie rarely missed a game.  She loved the university and sported an extensive BYU inspired wardrobe in support of Carl’s alma mater and her employer.  Mackie worked for the BYU Health Center for over 20 years.

She adored her grandkids, and they all knew it.  She was able to hand crochet blankets for many of the grandchildren, and every one of them felt her special love and attention and learned how to have fun by following her example.

Mackie was a devoted and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  She loved the gospel and served in many callings throughout her lifetime including in Relief Society and Primary presidencies.  She and Carl were called to serve as ordinance workers in the Mount Timpanogas temple before her declining health forced her to stop, but she felt the importance of the work and had joy in her service.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, her son Steve, her son Russ, and her daughter-in-law, Lori. She is survived by her husband Carl, their children Creig (Laurie); LeeAnn (Dean) Payne; Kathleen (Jim) Francis; Val (Merilee) and two daughters-in-law: Mary Rowley and Tamara Rowley; as well as 25 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.

Deane Sargent Wright Winters, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, died Thursday, Nov 3, 2016 in Lehi, Utah, during the month she would have turned 93. Her birth Nov. 25, 1923, at home in Coalville, Utah, surprised both parents because, while they were expecting a baby, they had no idea two red-headed twins were about to enter their lives. Deane and Donna Sargent Wright Dearden were not only sisters but also lifelong best friends.

Deane grew up in Coalville, Utah, and graduated from North Summit High School and LDS Seminary, where she met her eternal sweetheart Wayne Street Winters. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple Jan. 30, 1964, and celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary shortly before Wayne's death in 2011.

During World War 11, Wayne enlisted in the Air Force and Deane worked and waited for him as he served his country.

A wonderful homemaker and excellent cook, she also applied her talents to the work force and retired from Alpine School District after many years of service.

Deane was active in civic organizations such as the Jaycee wives and the Democratic political party.  She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings. Among her favorites were the 12 years she served as Primary president and the mission she served with her husband in Indianapolis, where they celebrated their 60th anniversary. Family meant everything to her.
